History

On August 25, 1889, eleven Swedish immigrants became the pillars on which this church was founded. Through their faith, courage, dedication and service, the church grew in its service to God. Known then as "The Swedish Mission," they began the foundation which is now "First Covenant Church of Willoughby Hills."
In 1894 after meeting in several halls and homes the small congregation, desirous of a church home, built the first church building in Cleveland at Lexington Avenue and East 55th Street. A new larger church facility was built at Addison and Decker Avenues in 1910. The Lord's work continued and prospered there until 1955 when a new facility was built on Green Road in Cleveland. It was then that the church congregation became affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant Church of America headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.
In 1990, four acres of land for a new facility was acquired at Chardon and Rockefeller Roads in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. This is the location of our present church facility. The church was constructed to be completely handicap-accessible and allows seating for 200 people. The church hosts dinners, weddings and other group meetings as well as an adult Sunday School. Sunday Worship services are conducted with the accompaniment of a baby grand piano and occasionally our 75-year-old pipe organ. On August 25, 2019, the church celebrated its 130-year anniversary.
We feel richly blessed as we acknowledge that God has granted us over 130 years of service to his kingdom, and with a spirit of joy and confidence, we continue to serve him. May God grant grace to all who have labored and continue to labor to carry on the service of our Lord.
